Not just for kids…

Babar’s World Tour visits the Kids Art Museum, November 19

Children’s author Laurent de Brunhoff will sign his newest book, Babar’s World Tour, on Saturday, November 19th at the Denver Art Museum. Like the latest Babar book, the day’s celebration will take visitors around the globe, introducing them to an international array of cities, landmarks, art, culture, and languages. Denver will receive a "passport" to take on their museum tour, receiving a stamp for participating in the various activities throughout the galleries. Throughout the day, families and kids can enjoy special art-making projects; decorating Babar-style crowns for their journeys, and even designing their own art museum! Visitors are invited to relax in the fourth-floor reading corner, and to hear storytelling on the third and sixth floors. A book signing will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. (books will be available for sale in the Museum Shop). These free family activities will take place between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Museum admission and activities are free; no reservations required.

United States Mint Tours

Monday through Friday, 8 a.m to 3 p.m.

Many of us enjoyed watching the coining process and the chance to tour our local Mint as children. After 9/11, our ability to offer this same opportunity to our children was curtailed due to strict background checks, and long waiting processes. Today, however, the Denver Mint is simplifying the process for the general public again. Groups of 15 or fewer can make a reservation online, and larger groups (16-50) can arrange through the Office of Public Affairs at the United States Mint by calling 303.405.4759. All tours are free and open to the public. Those interested are encouraged to submit tour requests as early as possible since a limited number of tours are available daily.

NEW FORECLOSURES RISE; TOTAL INVENTORY REMAINS STABLE IN OCTOBER

According to data released today by Foreclosure.com, 87,794 foreclosed residential properties were available for sale in the United States during October–almost unchanged from September. The total number of new foreclosures listed for sale in October–21,998– increased 8% from September. The re-listing of available HUD-owned properties in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas, resulted in the increase of new foreclosures in October. "Foreclosure levels in the U.S. remain low compared to the beginning of this year," said Brad Geisen, president and CEO, Foreclosure.com. "While there are still pockets of increasing inventory in the Midwest and Northwest, foreclosure levels in most of the country have remained flat during the past six months." MORTGAGE RATES HIGHEST SINCE SEPTEMBER, 2003

Mortgage rates rose for the ninth week in a row after bond investors were scared over evidence that wage earners are making more money. Most of the week’s rise occurred Friday, after the Department of Labor released the employment report for October. Job creation wasn’t anything to celebrate, as nonfarm payrolls increased by just 56,000. The benchmark 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage rose 5 basis points to 6.42%, according to the Bankrate.com national survey of large lenders. A basis point is one-hundredth of 1 percentage point. The mortgages in this week’s survey had an average total of 0.32 discount and origination points. One year ago, the mortgage index was 5.76%. Four weeks ago it was 6.1%.
