When looking around downtown Denver for a place to park, one might notice the parking meters that aren’t situated at the curb. They may look like parking meters, but they have a different purpose.
Denver has is on an campaign to end Homelessness. These meters you see are for donating to the cause.
Instead of slipping a homeless person some pocket change, slip your change into one of these meters. By doing so you will help a homeless person use public transportation, hopefully to reach an appointment for a job interview. A $1.50 buys a meal or $20 will provide a homeless family shelter, clothing, employment assistance and case management for a day.
So next time you want to help, be sure you use the meter, that way your donation gets funneled into the right hands.
Oh, and don’t forget to feed the real meter when you are downtown, otherwise you’ll be making a donation to the City and County of Denver’s parking division.
Been there, done that.
