When I was growing up in a small town in New Jersey, it was easy to get around. The kids walked to and from school each day including going home for lunch. When Mom needed something from the store I would hop on my bike and go get it for her in about 15 minutes.
The streets were safe and busy. People walked, rode bikes and seldom thought to use a car, unless it was for major shopping or going long distance.
Today the cities are trying to get back to those days, using various initiatives like “Denver Living Streets.” It seems odd to me that teaching people how to ride a bike instead of driving is necessary, but so be it.
Rocky Mountain PBS has a short video series on how Denver is working to influence neighborhoods to pattern themselves into the new urbanism stream of life. They are well done and worth watching.
It’s time to dust off that old bike and fill up the tires!
If you would like to watch the entire series visit Denver Living Streets.
There’s no better place to live than a neighborhood where people take an interest and have pride in the area.
Denver rocks!
