Thoughts on Focus

Social networking rocks!  This year I’ve gotten involved with a photography group that meets to do what is called a “Photowalk.”  A photowalk is when a group of people meet at one place and proceed to a specified location to shoot photos.  It is a great way for people who share the same passion to meet and share their knowledge and friendship.

This particular Meetup began at the Starbucks on 16th Street Mall and Tremont Court.  From this location we walked to the magnificent Civic Center Park adjacent to the Colorado State Capitol.  This time of year the holiday decorations are so distracting for a photographer, particularly at night!

I was busy shooting this:

When all of a sudden I turned around and saw this…

Funny, the Capitol was there all the time, andthe moon just happened to be The Largest Moon of all year.  What luck I found when I tore my focus from the Civic Center and simply turned around!

There is actually a lesson to be learned here.  When we focus on one thing to the exclusivity of all else, we miss things.

Let’s not miss anything in life.  Let’s do a 360 and take it all in.

That looks great to me! Always enjoy your shots and gives me some ideas. Have a nice Christmas.

We even had snow last week, it was a freak accident that lasted 3-4 hours. Now I have to mow the grass this week as the leaves are falling big time today.

Ok, I’m totally jealous of your ability to capture beautiful photos!

Irina, Dustin (his family) and I took a walk around Pasadena where they have these great big pine trees decorated with lights and other ornaments. They’re huge and capture, well, the holiday spirit of course. But we couldn’t capture a good shot! (My little digital camera isn’t going to do the trick I can tell ya that much).

Ricardo, spend some of your money and get an slr digital camera. You will need a tri-pod as I am sure Krystal uses one at nite. The are vrey cheap. Then you can capture the sites and its a business expense.

Thanks all for the nice compliments! Night photography is one of my favorites. Eric is right it does take a good tripod and some patience. The SLR allows me to take a ton of photos so I can be sure one works.

I used a 30 second shutter speed on the Capitol in order to capture the light trails of the automobiles on Broadway.

The Blue Bear is also a night shot, I forget the exposure settings, but I must admit I used Lightroom to adjust it in order to see inside the building better. The Blue Bear is a challenging shot because of the wide contrast in color and the fact he’s on the north side of the building under the overhang. He’s also about 30 feet tall!

Kristal..Totally awesome. I can’t wait to get a better camera. Even with a tripod my night shots are terrible. some day…

That first picture looks like one of the resorts on the Las Vegas strip. I love the capital shot. I so need to upgrade to a better camera. I can never get night shots to come out right.

Great shots, great thoughts about focus. I think we’re kindred spirits – well, duh, that’s what all the blogging and tweeting are about, right? ~attracting birds of a feather ~ I am new at all this online networking, and you’re a great role model – thanks!

Beautiful pic, Kristal. I’ve always enjoyed all your shots you post here. I’ve been thinking about taking a photography class just on the side at one of the local colleges. I think you just motivated me.

Loved your photos and especially your reminder to look around and see the big picture.

I don’t think I have the patience for an SLR camera. Like Dave, I think I might take a photo course this Winter, so thanks for the nudge ;-)
