Interest rates across the U.S. have remained below 6 percent for the past 22 weeks. "Although mortgage rates are expected to rise in 2005, it will not be too a big enough degree to take much of the steam out of the housing industry," said Amy Crews Cutts, Freddie Mac’s deputy chief economist. Still, "sales may drop of slightly."
The interest rate hardly changed at all in 2004. At the beginning of the year the average was 5.83 percent, at the end of 2004 it was 5.84 percent.
