Once a major lumbering community the town of Larkspur was a bustling town with 2 sawmills, a blacksmith shop, hotel, two general stores, post office, casino and school. Early industry consisted of gypsum, red sandstone and potash mines. The railroad line served as a shipping point for the raw goods, later on delivering tourists seeking fresh air. The passenger train would arrive to find trumpeters and dancers greeting them in a merry style. A stage coach would transport the tourists off to nearby health resort called Perry Park.

In recent times, Larkspur has become known as the home to the Renaissance Festival welcoming thousands of visitors each summer. The Festival is an annual event held on weekends only for 10 consecutive weeks. The popular Festival is entering its 4th decade and was recently voted best family festival in Colorado by Parents Magazine! Visitors are encouraged to dress in period costume and participate with the actors.
