Things to do with KIDS in Denver…
There are no shortage of things to do for the family in Denver. Kids of all ages will enjoy visiting the places described here. Many places a worth more than one visit, so consider buying the "family pass" when offered.
Inside activities
An insect zoo may not seem interesting to most, but this one has an extensive collection of insects, including a wonderful assortment of over 1,200 free-flying butterflies that is absolutely magical! Be sure to include the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster in your plans on your next rainy day.
The Denver Zoo is one of the most popular Zoo’s in the U.S. Located near downtown Denver in the City Park, it’s simple to get to, so there are no excuses not to go. The kids will love watching the otter’s play either on top or under the water. I love watching the polar bears in their beautiful Denver habitat.
Education becomes a true adventure at the Denver Children’s Museum. This huge facility offers hands on excitement for kids. It’s definitely a "don’t miss it" activity.
If your kid’s school hasn’t made a trip to visit the Denver Mint, be sure to schedule a trip on your own. Our Mint in Denver is one of only two full-service mints in the nation. The Denver Mint is the largest producer of coins in the world!
The Denver Library is renowned for it’s kids resources not just at the Downtown Library but online as well. Most kids know more about computers these days than we do, so perhaps you should ask them about it…
Kids of all ages love trains. In nearby Georgetown (30 minutes up the I-70 Pass) gets you to the historic Georgetown Loop Railroad. Enjoy riding on a real locomotive while you experience the sites and sounds of Colorado. While up there, don’t miss the Lebanon Silver Mine Tour. These are seasonal attractions so be sure you are "in season!"
A few years ago the Seattle based REI converted the old Denver Tramway building into a REI Flagship store. The store is located on 1416 Platte Street, right on the Platte river. If you are so inclined, the kids can go use the "climbing wall" while you sip coffee on the patio overlooking the river.
There’s another charming (and free) place to take the little ones; that’s the Cherry Creek Mall. Yes, you must exercise a strong will and determination if you don’t want to spend money! Inside the mall there is a play area where all the "play objects" are breakfast food. I enjoy watching the little tikes climb over the buttered French toast or bacon and eggs!
Outdoor Activities
No summer is complete without a trip to Elitch Gardens Denver’s Six Flags amusement park. I love the way the Denver skyline changed when the park was moved from the Highlands neighborhood to the Riverfront area in the shadow of Downtown Denver. There’s something about a Ferris Wheel in your focus that makes life not all that serious!
